Key fob replacement and programming, at your vehicle
A fob that has stopped responding has three possible causes at three different prices. We identify which one it actually is at your vehicle, then fixes that, rather than reaching straight for the most expensive answer.
Or send a service request online if you cannot call right now.
Diagnosed properly, not just replaced
A fob that has stopped responding has three possible causes, and they are not the same price. We work through them in order rather than selling you the most expensive one.
-
The battery and contacts are checked
Power is confirmed first, along with the contacts inside the fob, because a fob that looks dead is not always a fob that has failed.
-
Synchronization is tested against the vehicle
A fob that has lost its pairing can often be brought back rather than replaced, which is a cheaper outcome for you.
-
A replacement is programmed only if needed
If the fob has genuinely failed, the new one is paired to your vehicle and tested on the locks and the ignition before the job is closed.

Why fobs stop working
A key fob that stops responding has one of three causes: a dead coin cell, a fob that has lost synchronization with the vehicle, or a fob that has genuinely failed. They look identical from the driver seat but they are not the same repair or the same price. We identify which one it is at the vehicle, and a replacement fob is only installed when it is actually the answer. Any replacement must be programmed to your specific vehicle, so a fob cannot simply be bought and used.
- Three causes, three prices. The cheapest is checked first, not the most profitable.
- A new fob is never plug and play. It has to be paired to your vehicle.
- Online fobs are a gamble. Wrong part numbers and locked used fobs are both common.
What the symptom tells us
Describing exactly what your fob does, or does not do, usually identifies the cause before anyone drives out. That means the right part is on the van.
| What you are seeing | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens at all when you press a button | Dead coin cell battery | Power is confirmed first. This is by far the most common answer. |
| Works only very close to the vehicle | Weak battery, or a worn contact inside the fob | Power is checked first. If range stays short, the fob itself may be failing. |
| Buttons work but the vehicle ignores them | Lost synchronization with the vehicle | Often correctable without new hardware, which is the cheaper outcome. |
| Some buttons work, others do not | Physical wear on the button contacts | Usually a fob replacement, because the fault is mechanical. |
| Fob is cracked, wet, or was run over | Physical damage to the board | Replacement, programmed to the vehicle. |
| Vehicle will not detect the fob at all, and it is push to start | Dead fob battery, or a flat vehicle battery | The vehicle battery is checked too, because a dead car battery mimics a dead fob. |
Do not overlook the vehicle battery
On a push to start vehicle, a dead car battery produces symptoms that look exactly like a dead fob. Nothing unlocks, nothing lights up, and the fob appears to be at fault. If your vehicle has been standing for a while, mention it in your request. It is a detail that changes the diagnosis, and a new fob would not have fixed it.
Which fob do you have?
The type decides what replacing it involves. A fob with a hidden blade needs that blade cut as well as programmed, and a proximity fob is never inserted at all.

What replacing a fob actually involves
A replacement fob is not usable out of the packet. It has to be paired to your vehicle so the immobilizer accepts it, and on most vehicles the remote functions are paired at the same time. If the fob contains an emergency blade, that blade also has to be cut to your locks.
Both the fob and the vehicle have to be in the same place for this, which is exactly why a mobile service suits the job. So do you, with proof of ownership, because pairing a new remote to a vehicle is precisely what somebody stealing it would want to do.
Have this ready before you request service
Every item below either speeds the job up or decides whether it can be done at all. Having them ready at the start avoids a second trip.
- The year, make, and model of the vehicle.
- Whether you have any working key or fob left.
- The exact location of the vehicle, including a lot, level, or row if it is in a garage.
- Registration or title in your name, plus a photo ID that matches it.
- Whether the vehicle is drivable and whether it is blocked in.
Buying a fob online
It is the cheapest route when it works. These are the three ways it commonly does not.
- Wrong part. Fobs that look identical can use different frequencies and different chips.
- Already paired. A used fob may be locked to another vehicle and unable to be released.
- Not returnable. Once the emergency blade has been cut, it generally cannot go back.
Already bought one? Include the part number with your request for an honest answer first.
What decides the cost of a replacement fob
-
Tell us about the job
The year, make, and model, whether any working key is left, and where the vehicle is parked.
-
Get your quote and ETA upfront
You hear the price for your exact vehicle or lock, and when to expect us, before anyone is dispatched.
-
Pay when the work is done
Nothing is paid up front. You pay once the job is finished and tested. Card, tap to pay, and cash are all accepted.
What changes the price
- Key type
- A basic mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote head key, and a proximity smart key are different parts with different costs.
- Programming needs
- Some vehicles accept a new key with on board programming. Others require a diagnostic tool and a security access process that takes longer.
- How many keys are lost
- Replacing a spare while you still hold a working key is a shorter job than an all keys lost situation, which needs the key cut from the vehicle code and the system reprogrammed.
- Vehicle security level
- Some manufacturers hold key data behind a secure gateway or a waiting period. That changes the time and the equipment required.
- Location and access
- A vehicle in an open driveway is quicker to work on than one in a tight garage bay or a lot that limits access.

Key fob questions
Often not, and that matters because the three possible causes are not the same price. A dead coin cell, a fob that has lost synchronization with the vehicle, and a genuinely failed fob all look identical from the driver seat.
We work through them in that order and tell you which one it is, so you are not sold a replacement fob for a fault that was never the fob.
Yes. Entry and the fob problem are handled in the same visit, at the vehicle, so you are not left dealing with one and then arranging the other.
Say in your request that you cannot get into the vehicle at all, because that changes the order the job is approached in and it is worth knowing before anyone sets off.
No. If the fault turns out to be power or synchronization rather than the fob itself, that is what you are told and that is what gets fixed. Selling somebody a programmed fob they did not need is how this trade earned its reputation.
You get the diagnosis before any part is replaced, so the decision is yours with the facts in front of you.
Sometimes. It depends on whether the part is genuinely correct for your vehicle and whether it is already locked to another one.
Used fobs are frequently paired to a previous vehicle and cannot always be released. Aftermarket fobs vary widely in quality, and visually identical fobs can use different frequencies and chips. Send the part number with your request for an honest answer before anyone drives out.
A key fob in the traditional sense is a remote with buttons that lock and unlock the doors. You still put a physical key in the ignition to start the engine.
A smart key, also called a proximity key, does not need to be inserted at all. The vehicle detects it nearby and you start the engine with a button. Replacing a smart key is a different and usually stricter process, covered on the transponder and smart key page.
Yes, and so does the vehicle. Programming pairs the fob to your specific vehicle, so both have to be in the same place. You also need to be there with proof of ownership, because pairing a new remote to somebody else's vehicle is exactly what a thief would want.

Tell us what your fob is doing
Send the year, make, model, and exactly what the fob does or does not do. That description usually identifies the cause before anyone drives out, so the right part arrives with him.
Or send a service request online if you cannot call right now.
Call or text with the vehicle or the property, the exact location, and what happened. You get an upfront quote and an arrival estimate before anyone is dispatched, and you pay only after the work is done.
