Mercedes-Benz keys, the short answer

A Mercedes-Benz key is replaced by identifying which key system the vehicle uses, cutting a blade where the vehicle has one, and programming the key to the immobilizer so the engine will start. The year, model, and trim decide which system applies, and on some Mercedes-Benz vehicles the work must be done by a dealer.

  • 3 priority Mercedes-Benz models covered in detail further down this page.
  • Still hold one working key? Say so. It usually makes the job significantly simpler and cheaper.
  • Honest limits. Where a dealer is required for your Mercedes-Benz, you are told before anyone is dispatched.

How Mercedes-Benz key systems work

Mercedes-Benz has used several immobilizer generations. Older vehicles used systems that an equipped specialist can work with. Vehicles from roughly the mid 2010s onward use a newer generation that is far more locked down, and the key is tied cryptographically to the vehicle.

Identify what you have before you request anything

Most of the confusion around car keys comes from people describing the wrong thing. These five categories cover nearly every vehicle on the road, and knowing which one you hold answers half the questions before they are asked.

The five key types, and what each one means for a replacement.
What you are holdingWhat it isWhat replacing it involves
Plain metal key, no plastic headA mechanical key with no chipCutting only. The simplest and cheapest replacement.
Key with a thick plastic headA transponder key with a chip in the headCutting plus programming to the immobilizer.
Key that folds into the fobA remote head or flip keyCutting, immobilizer programming, and remote pairing.
Fob with a blade that slides outA proximity smart key with an emergency bladeProgramming the fob, plus cutting the emergency blade.
Fob with no blade at allA proximity key on a push to start vehicleProgramming only, but the security process is usually stricter.

The honest limit on Mercedes-Benz

Newer generation Mercedes-Benz vehicles usually require the dealer for a lost key. This is a genuine limitation across the industry, not a shortcoming of any one provider. Expect a straight answer about which side of that line your vehicle falls on.

Have this ready before you request service

Every item below either speeds the job up or decides whether it can be done at all. Having them ready at the start avoids a second trip.

  • The year, make, and model of the vehicle.
  • Whether you have any working key or fob left.
  • The exact location of the vehicle, including a lot, level, or row if it is in a garage.
  • Registration or title in your name, plus a photo ID that matches it.
  • Whether the vehicle is drivable and whether it is blocked in.

What happens at your Mercedes-Benz

Every Mercedes-Benz key job follows the same sequence, and you are present for all of it.

  • The key system is confirmed from your year, model, and trim, so the correct part is on the van before anyone sets off.
  • Ownership is checked against your registration or title and a matching photo ID.
  • The key is cut and programmed at the vehicle, wherever it happens to be parked.
  • It is tested in front of you in the ignition and on the door locks before the job is closed.

Priority Mercedes-Benz models

These are the Mercedes-Benz models seen most often in this region. The key system still depends on the year and the trim, so treat these as a starting point rather than a final answer for your specific vehicle.

The model name is not the answer. Two vehicles with the same badge and different build years can need two different key systems and two different tools.

Why the year and trim decide the job

Manufacturers change key systems mid generation and across trim levels. A base model and a higher trim from the same year can use a chipped blade key and a proximity fob respectively, which are different parts at different prices.

The registration details and a photograph of your existing key settle it in seconds, which is why both are asked for before anything is dispatched.

The models above are the ones asked about most, not the limit of what can be worked on. Send your year, model, and trim with your request and you get a direct answer about your specific vehicle. This site does not claim to cover every Mercedes-Benz ever built, because that claim would not be true for anyone.

What you may actually need for your Mercedes-Benz

"I need a car key" covers several different jobs. These are the four that come up most, and they are not priced or performed the same way.

Cost

What changes the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key

What the job needs is what it costs. The key type, whether a working key still exists, and the programming route are the three things that move the figure.

This site does not publish a price list, because an honest figure for a Mercedes-Benz key needs the details of your vehicle: the year, model, and trim, which key it uses, and whether any working key is left.

What moves the price for every brand is set out on the car key replacement page. Send those details and you get a real number for your Mercedes-Benz.

Questions

Mercedes-Benz key questions

In many cases yes, and the situation has a name. It is called all keys lost. With no key to copy, a new key is generated from the vehicle itself and then programmed so the immobilizer accepts it.

Whether it can be done away from a dealer depends on the model year and the security system installed. Newer generation Mercedes-Benz vehicles usually require the dealer for a lost key. This is a genuine limitation across the industry, not a shortcoming of any one provider. Expect a straight answer about which side of that line your vehicle falls on.

The full process is on the all keys lost page.
